Using Your Own Car On A Practical Driving Test?

Did you know you can use your own car for the driving test if it meets certain rules. However, your test will be cancelled and you could lose your fee if your car doesn’t meet the required standards.

Your vehicle must:
  • be properly insured and have a valid tax disc
  • be roadworthy and have a current MOT if it needs one
  • have a seat belt for the examiner
  • have an interior rear-view mirror for the examiner (these are available from most motor stores)
  • have a proper passenger head restraint (not a slip-on type)
  • be a smoke-free environment
  • have 4 wheels
  • be able to reach at least 62mph
  • have a speedometer measuring speed in mph
  • have no warning lights showing - for example, the airbag warning light
  • have L-plates (‘L’ or ‘D’ plates in Wales) on the front and rear
  • have a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of no more than 3,500 Kgs
If you are thinking of taking your car for your Practical Driving Test its worth checking that there have been no manufacture recalls on your vehicle.

If there has been a recall your vehicle will need to be checked and fixed before you can use it for the driving test if it’s on the list.

You’ll need to take proof to your test that the vehicle has been fixed properly. The proof you bring has to be one of the following:
  • the actual recall letter or safety notice that has been stamped by the manufacturer or dealer
  • written proof from the manufacturer or a dealer (on official or headed paper)
Your test will be cancelled and you could lose your fee if you don’t bring the right proof.

To view the list of recalled vehicles visit...  http://bit.ly/WA9VI2

Who Needs To Wear A Seat Belt?

You must wear a seat belt if one is fitted in the seat you’re using. But you need to wear your seat belt correctly for it to work properly in a crash. Find out when you must wear a seat belt and how it should be worn.

You’re twice as likely to die in a crash if you don’t wear a seat belt

You must wear a seat belt if one is fitted in any seat in any vehicle. There are few exceptions.

When you’re driving, you must only carry one person in each seat fitted with a seat belt. Anyone travelling in the vehicle aged 14 years and above is responsible for wearing their seat belt.

Children must use the correct car seat for their weight until they reach 135 centimetres tall or their 12th birthday, whichever comes first.

When you don't need to wear a seat belt?

You don't need to wear a seat belt if you're...

- A driver who is reversing, or supervising a learner driver who is reversing

- In a vehicle being used for police, fire and rescue services

- A passenger in a trade vehicle and you're investigating a fault

- Driving a goods vehicle on deliveries that is travelling no more than 50 metres between stops

- A licensed taxi driver who is 'plying for hire' or carrying passengers

Medical exemptions from wearing a seat belt.

Your doctor may decide that you may be exempted from wearing a seat belt on medical grounds. If so, they will issue a 'Certificate of Exemption from Compulsory Seat Belt Wearing', which you must
keep in your vehicle and show to the police if you're stopped. You’ll also need to tell your car insurer that you're travelling without a seat belt.

For more information about medical exemptions, contact your doctor.

Wearing your seat belt correctly.

A seat belt won't work properly in a crash if it’s put around two people, as they would be crushed together, resulting in serious injuries
To protect you in a crash, your seat belt needs to be adjusted so that...

- It sits as close to your body as possible, without any slack or twisting in the straps

- The shoulder belt lies across your chest and over your shoulder, away from your neck

- The lap belt goes as low as possible from hip bone to hip bone - not across your stomach

If your seat belt is uncomfortable, check the vehicle manufacturer's advice about how to adjust it. Don't use padding, cushions or mats.

Using seat belts with frontal airbags

Airbags are designed to be used with seat belts, but in a crash they can cause an injury if you're sitting too close. You should...

- Allow at least a 25-centimetre gap between your breastbone and the dashboard or centre of the steering wheel

- Only use a rear-facing child car seat on a seat with a frontal airbag if the airbag has been deactivated

Dont forget to adjust your head rest when adjusting your seat belt.

Make sure you also adjust the head rests in the front and back seats to prevent a whiplash injury in a crash. The top of the head rest should be level with the top of your ears and as close as possible to your head.

Wearing a seat belt while pregnant.

In an accident, a seat belt reduces the risk of injury to your unborn child by up to 70 per cent

You must wear a seat belt if you're pregnant, unless your doctor certifies that you're exempt on medical grounds.

You’ll need to take extra care adjusting your seat belt. You'll be safer and more comfortable if you wear the...

- Diagonal strap between your breasts, moving it around the side of your bump

- Lap strap as low as possible across your hips and under your bump – if it goes over your belly button, it's too high.

If you’re driving and need to make room for your bump, don’t put your seat where you can’t reach the clutch, brake and accelerator. This could affect your reaction times when driving. Check your mirrors are still in the right place as you move the seat.

Wearing a seat belt if you're disabled.

You must wear a seat belt if you’re a disabled driver or passenger, unless you’re exempt on medical grounds. You may need a specially adapted belt.

If your vehicle has no seat belts.

You can't carry any children under three years old in vehicles without seatbelts, like classic cars. If you're travelling with children over three years old, they must only sit in the back seats.

New Hazard Perception Test In 2013

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has confirmed that they are in the process of updating the clips to in the Hazard Perception Test, with the aim of introducing them into the second part of the Theory Test by the end of 2013. They will be developing Computer Generated (CGI) clips, which means the DSA can introduce new hazards that would be difficult to film safely. Particularly, clips involving vulnerable road users.

The current hazard perception clips were introduced into the Theory Test in November 2002 and were created by filming developing hazards in a variety of road and traffic situations using a specially adapted car. Due to the advances in technology, although the hazards in each of the clips are still relevant, the image quality is not as clear or defined as is available today.

The DSA wants people to take a look at the samples they have created of the new computer generated hazard perception clips. These are only early tests so may change from the samples they have released.

Watch two of the Computer Generated Hazard Perception sample clips here… Hazard Perception Clips

Another Driving Test Examiner Strike

The DSA's Driving Test Examiners are set to go on strike again on Friday the 21st of September 2012. The DSA are urging all candidates who have a practical tests booked on the 21st of September should attend as usual, despite the potential for strike action by driving test examiners who are members of the Public & Commercail Services Union (PCS).

The DSA’s chief executive Rosemary Thew said:

“Not all examiners are members of the PCS union and even if they are, we can’t be sure that they’ll support the strike. So we’re asking candidates to come for their test as normal so it can go ahead if possible. We’re sorry for the inconvenience this will cause and will do everything we can to minimise disruption for our customers.”
Candidates who turn up but can’t take their tests because of strike action will not have to contact the DSA to rebook. They should hear from the agency with a new date within 5 to 10 working days. If candidates fail to attend they won’t be able to claim out-of-pocket expenses if their tests are cancelled and they’ll need to rebook their own tests.

Details about claiming out-of-pocket expenses can be found at http://www.direct.gov.uk/drivingtestexpenses

Theory tests are not affected and will be taking place as planned.

10% Fall In 17-24 Year Olds Taking Their Driving Test

In recent statistics released by The Department for Transport (DfT) reveal nearly a 10% fall in 17-24 year olds took their test between 2011 - 2012 (just under 320,000). A fall of nearly 50,000 compared to 2010 - 2011.

With the UK in it's tough economic situation, not having a driving licence can have a big impact on you when you enter the working world. In many industries, a person that doesn’t hold a full driving licence is at an automatic disadvantage over other potential employees. This can mean they are overlooked in favour of someone who can drive.

Driving is the biggest step you can take in gaining your independence. So, what are you waiting for? Where will passing your test take you?

Maintaining Your Vehicle

Maintaining your vehicle is essential to help ensure that it is roadworthy, reliable, safe to drive and not a danger to other road users.

There are several weekly checks you should make on your vehicle such as…

  • Checking and topping up fluid levels such as engine coolant, engine oil and brake fluid.
  •  Checking your vehicles tyre tread depth is more than 1.6mm across the central ¾ of the tyre and around the entire circumference. Make sure there are no cuts or bulges in the tyre wall. Also check your tyres air pressure and replace the valves dust caps. Always remember to check your spare wheel if your vehicle has one.
  •  Check that all your lights are working correctly, (head lights, tail lights, full beam, indicators, brake lights and fog lights).
  •  Check your wiper blades are in good condition and the windscreen washer fluid bottle is full.
  •  Also, ensure that all your windows, mirrors, lights and number plates are clean.

The information on how to perform these tasks will be in the vehicle owner's manual supplied with the vehicle. This manual will also cover any other additional maintenance activities that are recommended for your vehicle.

As well as these regular vehicle checks it’s also important that you stick to the manufacturer’s routine service intervals. These will vary with every manufacturer and vehicle. Details of the service requirements are normally written in the owner's manual which was supplied with the vehicle.

Eco Driving Tips

10 Tips To Eco Driving - A few extra miles per gallon and fewer expensive visits to the pumps.

1 - Empty Your Boot.
Excess weight of items you may be lugging around in your boot you could cost you more than you think. For every 45kg of excess weight could increase your fuel comsuption up to 2%.

2 - Remove Roof Racks.
Removing roof racks when they're not being used is enough to make a 10% difference as it creates more drag.

3 - Maintain A Steady Speed.
Accelerating and braking are the two main areas where energy will be wasted. Plan ahead to maintain a steady speed.

4 - Change Gear Earlier.
When accelerating away from a stop, only go as fast as you need to and change up through the gears as soon as possible without labouring the engine. The ideal change-up point is at around 2,000rpm for diesel engines and 2,500rpm for petrol engines.

5 - Check Your Tyre Pressures.
Check your tyres regularly so they are at the correct pressures. Underinflated tyres cause drag on the cars performance. For every 1 psi under inflation, fuel consumption increases by 0.5%. Under inflation of 4psi across the entire vehicle, you are using 2% more fuel.

6 - Plan Your Journey.
Spending a few minutes to check traffic reports and planning your journey can save you time, money and stress. But, remember don't travel an extra 20 miles just to save a couple of minutes of queuing on your journey. Be sensible.

7 - Look Ahead.

Don't focus just on the piece of tarmac in front of your car. Look ahead and anticipate traffic light changes etc. Unnecessary braking wastes energy, turning it into useless heat.

8 - Regular Servicing.
By investing in regular servicing you are making sure you get the optimum performance and economy from your vehicle.

9 - Windows Open Below 50mph To Keep Cool.
Below 50mph it is better to have the windows open to cool you down, but when you get over that speed, it's more fuel-efficient to use the air-condition than have the windows open.

And Most Importantly…

10 - SLOW DOWN.
The most obvious point to make but, by simply slowing down, saves a considerable amount of fuel. Driving at 70mph uses up to 9% more fuel than at 60mph and up to 15% more than at 50mph. A common sight is the car cruising at 80mph in the right lane of the motorway. This can increase fuel consumption up to 25% more than 70mph. It pays to slow down, not just in fuel but in unwanted fines and points on your licence.

On The Day Of Your Test

At the beginning of your driving test, after you have been asked by the DSA examiner to read a number plate at a distance of 20.5 meters. Once you get back to your car (or your driving instructors car), you will be asked 2 of the DSA show me, tell me questions.
If you are taking your driving test in a driving school car, you should ensure that you become familiar with where to find the required aspects that you may be asked to identify during your driving lessons.
These questions are designed to check your knowledge of basic car safety and will include one 'show me' aspect, where you actually have to demonstrate how and what you would do to check / adjust something, and one 'tell me' aspect where you would simply have to explain how you would do something.

DSA Show Me, Tell Me Questions 2012

Q1: Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level & tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.

A1: Identify dipstick / oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the minimum / maximum markers.

Q2: Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey. If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly.

A2: Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.

Q3: Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.

A3: Identify high / low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap & describe how to top up to correct level.

Q4: Show me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear.

A4: Demonstrate by applying parking brake (handbrake) so that when it is fully applied it secures itself, and is not at the end of the working travel.(Make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle apply foot brake firmly).

Q5: Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is & tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.

A5: Identify reservoir & explain how to check level.

Q6: Show me how you would check that the horn is working (Off road only).

A6: Check is carried out by using control. (Turn on ignition if necessary).

Q7: Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is & tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

A7: Identify reservoir, check level against high / low markings.

Q8: Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.

A8: Applying the indicators or hazard warning switch & check functioning of all indicators. (you may need to switch ignition on).

Q9: Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. (The examiner can assist you, if you need to switch the ignition on, don't start the engine).

A9: Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to help. (You may need to switch ignition on, but do not actually start engine).

Q10: Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

A10: Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

Q11: Tell me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working. (No need to exit vehicle).

A11: Operate switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle. (As this is a "Tell Me" question, there is no need to physically check the lights).

Q12: Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car & how tyre pressures should be checked.

A12: Check the Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check & adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.

Q13: Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth & that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

A13: No cuts & bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

Q14: Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.

A14: Operate control to wash & wipe windscreen (turn ignition on if necessary).

Q15: Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front & rear screens.

A15: Set all relevant controls including; fan, temperature, air direction / source & heated screen to clear windscreen and windows. (Engine does not have to be started for this demonstration).

Q16: Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) & explain when you would use it / them. (No need to exit vehicle).

A16: Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights & ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain use. (When visability is below 100 meters).

Q17: Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam & explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.

A17: Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light.

Q18: Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

A18: The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears & as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. (Some restraints might not be adjustable).

Q19: Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system (ABS).

A19: Warning light should illuminate on the dashboard if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system.
